About Tony Shorthouse - Artist
Tony moved to St. Ives in 1973, after ten years of working around the East End of London, and very quickly took up painting as a serious interest alongside his full-time career as a police officer.
As well as studying the works of former artists associated with St.Ives and Newlyn, he was very much influenced by various painters working in the local galleries, such as David Willis, Don McLeod and Keith English.
Lacking the benefits of any formal training he painted instinctively in a traditional, representational style and as early as 1977 his technique was recognised sufficiently to be invited to join the prestigious St. Ives Society of Artists.
On retiring from the Police in 1994 he was able to pursue his painting full-time and for a few years set up and operated the Waterfront Gallery in Penzance - a brief but useful experience that persuaded him to concentrate on his brushwork from home!
Over the years Tony has had numerous exhibitions in Cornwall, Brittany and more recently aboard The World which proved so successful that it largely funded the building of a large new studio at his Tresowes home. Further exhibitions are planned for Brittany and Northern Spain in the near future.
He also teaches painting in oils from his Chygwins Studio .....
.......oil is very much his preferred medium but watercolour is a close second.
